Take a deep breath and relax. This is not an interrogation and it is a two-way street. We want to know about you and you want to know about us.
What We Want to Know About You
Your current and past work experiences
Your current and future career plans
Best job/worst job and why
Best mentor/worst mentor and why
Share a difficult work situation, how would you have handled it differently
Your natural talents
We will let you know our timeframe for filling the role and we will tell you how you did at the end of the interview. Who wants to leave without knowing?
And if you have referrals, send them our way.
I know telling you not to be nervous is easier said than done but believe me, we are just as nervous as you are! New people meeting new people is always an adventure. We do our best to put you at ease and find out if we fit for you and you with us. So here are some helpful interviewing tips we learned over the years.
• Prepare ahead of time what you will ask us:
o What were our sales last year (in dollars)?
o Number of people in the department?
o What is our company culture?
o What is our management philosophy?
o What does the company do for continuous improvement efforts?
o Is there opportunity for advancement in the department?
o How many new products do we introduce each year?
o What has been our sales growth over the past few years?
• After the interview, send hand written thank you cards to the people that took the time to interview you. Always ask for business cards at the start of the interview or ask the receptionist for specific contact info.
Here is a little over view of how to structure your answers. It helps keep your thoughts together and give us the situation and resolution.
Situation or Task Describe the situation that you were in or the task that you needed to accomplish. You must describe a specific event or situation, not a generalized description of what you have done in the past. Be sure to give enough detail for the interviewer to understand. This situation can be from a previous job, from a volunteer experience, or any relevant event.
- Action you took Describe the action you took and be sure to keep the focus on you. Even if you are discussing a group project or effort, describe what you did — not the efforts of the team. Don’t tell what you might do, tell what you did.
- Results you achieved What happened? How did the event end? What did you accomplish? What did you learn?
- Ask clarifying questions if you don’t understand our questions – Just ask us to repeat the question so you can get it right.
When we ask a question, we are looking for examples of what you did in the past. If you do not have experience. Tell us, I have not yet faced that decision but this is how I would handle it. This shows you are willing to be “real” and admit when you don’t have the answer but based on what you know, you would handle a situation a certain way.
Be real and genuine, we want to see the real you and what you bring to our organization.
Be confident in your skills and don’t be nervous, we are family here.
